BLOG | Volatility is the New Normal

Behind every resilient organisation is a Board that knows how to listen, challenge and act decisively during volatility.

Indeed, we are operating in an environment of heightened uncertainty, characterised by geopolitical instability, supply chain disruptions, regulatory shifts and the accelerating pace of AI adoption. In this landscape, the traditional approach to governance is by necessity transforming rapidly.

At our recent Criticaleye Chair & Non-Executive Director (NED) Forum, we explored how leaders are adapting to these shifts. For Board directors, the focus has moved from passive oversight to rigorous accountability, active listening and addressing difficult issues directly.

Here are the six takeaways from the Forum on how to better future-proof and strengthen your Board:

  • Contextualise Volatility: Geopolitical conflict and economic instability are here to stay. Boards should focus on understanding the nature of these ongoing uncertainties rather than expecting them to disappear
  • Foster Honesty: The Chair sets the tone. Create a culture where all voices are heard and honesty is valued, even when uncomfortable, while promptly addressing passive engagement
  • Prepare for Worst-case Scenarios: Rigorously stress-test strategies against extreme conditions. The Board’s core responsibility is to challenge executives on risk management and ensure resilience
  • Engage in Long-term Strategic Dialogue: Dedicate time to slow-moving but significant shifts like demographic changes and climate change. Anticipating these structural changes is essential for future-proofing
  • Incorporate Political Insight: Having members with political expertise is critical for navigating the complexity between government policy and business strategy
  • Integrate External Perspectives: Look beyond your immediate ecosystem to stress-test strategies and reduce bias, ensuring more objective decision-making

To navigate these challenges effectively, Boards must move beyond traditional governance models and actively seek fresh perspectives outside their own businesses and networks. By fostering a culture of honest dialogue and leveraging external insights, Chairs and NEDs can better anticipate risks and drive sustainable growth.
