The independent non-executive director can provide a healthy dose of common sense to temper any boardroom bravado. They must therefore summon the courage to challenge the views of often headstrong management. The best NEDs know when to impart advice and when to take a step back. It’s a role that can help a business avert disaster but it can also be pivotal in driving decisions that can reap stellar commercial returns. Naturally, not everyone will be up to the job in hand.
