BLOG | Transforming Your Sustainability Strategy

Sustainability remains firmly on the agenda for most organisations, but the way leaders are approaching it is changing. What used to be driven by bold, standalone commitments are now shifting towards a more grounded approach integrated in everyday business decisions.

At Criticaleye’s 2026 Sustainability Forum, discussions among C-suite and Board-level leaders reflected a growing tension: how to stay ambitious while dealing with the practical realities of execution in a more complex and fragmented environment.

When leaders were asked to describe, in one word, what would transform their organisation’s sustainability strategy, “Regulation,” came up most often, alongside themes such as data, commitment and stability. These results highlight how challenge has evolved. The focus is no longer on whether to act, but on how to move forward in the face of competing pressures.

This shift is reshaping how strategies are developed. Rather than abandoning targets, organisations are adjusting them to reflect real constraints, whether technological, financial or geopolitical. There is a clear shift towards being more practical, achievable outcomes, rather than purely aspirational goals.

The role of the Board is also central to this transformation. Directors must challenge thinking, embed sustainability into core decision-making and push organisations to go beyond simply meeting regulatory requirements. Reliance on external frameworks alone is no longer sufficient; real leadership is increasingly derived from within.

At the same time, the energy transition is adding another layer of complexity. There is no single solution, and organisations and leaders are having to make long-term decisions without knowing exactly how things will plan out.

Check out this Criticaleye interview with Michael Lewis, Group CEO at Uniper, where he told us about the strategy to rebuild the company as a sustainable energy provider. In this, he provides expert knowledge and advice regarding working towards milestones and navigating intricate transitions. Click here to read more.

Ultimately, transforming a sustainability strategy requires sound judgement in the face of uncertainty, the confidence to act without perfect information and the ability to align stakeholders around a more empirical path forward. Those leaders who can navigate this well will not just keep up with change; they will help define it.

At Criticaleye, we connect leaders with the insight, challenge and Peer-to-Peer support needed to build resilient, practical sustainability strategies that deliver real impact. Through our Forums, connections and tailored leadership development solutions, we help Boards and executives cut through uncertainty, strengthen decision-making and drive meaningful progress.
