BLOG | A Time to Innovate for CEOs

Criticaleye’s annual CEO Retreat is just over a week away. We’ve titled this year’s event A Time to Innovate recognising the huge challenges and opportunities leadership teams are dealing with in the current environment.

Through a mix of speaker panels, one-to-one interviews and smaller roundtable discussions, CEOs will have the chance to interact with peers on business-critical issues including driving high performance, the impact of technology on business models, cyber security, Board effectiveness, identifying growth levers and much more.

Navigating the complexities of new technology will undoubtably be a top agenda item for our leaders at the Retreat. Indeed, next week’s event for CEOs and other senior executives comes hot on the heels of a recent discussion facilitated by Criticaleye on how to transform into a tech-driven business. Our leaders had some key insights and warnings to share about getting it wrong:

  • Technology transformation needs to start with the CEO taking on the sponsorship of the change, followed by the leadership team
  • Many Boards are too cautious on AI which means adoption is slow. CEOs and Boards should be championing the impact this technology can have right now but also in the future
  • Getting the data foundation in place is essential. This goes together with security and governance. Questions leaders should be asking when considering agentic AI include: Is AI right for the task? What type of agent is best suited to a given task? What level of autonomy is that agent given? And where does the human fit within this picture?
  • Governance and guardrails are made more complex by the ‘shadow IT’ within an organisation as individuals and teams experiment with tech in their own silos. You don’t want to stifle innovation but setting clear boundaries around how it should and shouldn’t be used is essential
  • Given the hype cycle we’re in, it’s important to keep a calm head. The new wave of technology coming through is a game-changer, but leaders shouldn’t get too carried away. Identify the low-hanging fruit that can make a tangible difference quickly
  • The pace of change is so fast that you might want to identify your ‘AI Scouts’ to spot the new technology that’s coming through. Find your champions within the business who will lead new ways of working with technology

So, while new technology presents a huge opportunity, leaders should ensure it’s not seen as merely a tool, but a strategic enabler which is going to drive real value to the business. That’s why in a panel session on the impact of tech on business models at next week’s Retreat, we’ll be examining how to balance the opportunity of new technology and AI with an overall tech strategy that aligns to objectives set out by the CEO and the Board.
